Appendix

Here is something you don't see every day. This is a photo taken during colonoscopy that shows the opening of the appendix from inside the colon. During colonoscopy, the scope is passed into the rectum and goes up the left side, across the middle and down the right side to the very beginning of the colon called the cecum. In the middle of the cecum, there is a round hole which is the opening of the hollow appendix. Nobody knows what purpose the appendix serves and it often has to be removed when it becomes infected. That is called appendicitis. This appendix looks normal.
