| On the left, you can see what a healty pink esophagus lining should look like. On the right, there is an example of a yeast infection of the esophagus. Note the white globules of yeast which coat the inner lining. Caused by Candida albicans or Monilia, this infection is most commonly seen when: the immune system is weakend, in diabetics, after high dose prednisone therapy, or when prolonged antibiotics are taken. This is a common problem in patients with AIDS. Treatment with antifungal agents is usually effective. |
